Oldest person in the UK: Gladys Hooper
Gladys Ada Elizabeth Hooper (née Nash, born 18 January 1903) of Ryde, Isle of Wight, is an English supercentenarian. At the age of 111, Gladys is the oldest living person in the United Kingdom following the death of 114-year-old Ethel Lang on 15 January 2015.
Gladys was the eldest child born to William John Nash (1878-1963) and Ada Emily Pilton (1882-1978). She was born in Bermondsey, London and grew up in Rottingdean near Brighton. Gladys was a concert pianist during the 1920s and was a close friend of Amy Johnson, who later became a pioneering aviator.
Unusual for the time, Gladys learned to drive in the 1920s and ran a care hire company, turning down an opportunity to become managing director of Hertz. In 1921, Gladys married Leslie Hermiston Hooper (1899-1977), a pilot in the Royal Flying Corps.
Gladys has one son, Derek, with whom she lives, as well as four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
